October was a month of continuing to harvest, feast, and can. The beds were all producing annuals, and we planted several perennials for next year, including strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and apple trees.

The main challenge this month was planning for potential frosts. There are no weather stations close to us, either as the crow flies or by altitude, which makes it difficult to predict whether the temperature will drop below freezing overnight at our location. We built some small hoop frames and would cover the plants with plastic sheeting when it seemed like it might freeze. Overall I think we were able to get a couple more weeks to the growing season as a result!
We also built some cold frames to extend the growing season even further. Nothing is planted there yet, but they're ready to go for next year!
